In the dictionary of “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English language”: Fourth Edition 2000, the word “Multimedia” means

PLURAL NOUN: (used with a sing. verb)
1. The combined use of media, such as movies, music, lighting, CD-ROMs, and the Internet, as for education or entertainment.
2. The combined use of media, such as television, radio, print, and the Internet, as for advertising or publicity
The term multimedia appeared through the media in the beginning of 1990. This term is used to unify the digital technology and analog in the entertainment world, publishing, communications, marketing, advertising, and also commerce. Multimedia comes from two words, they are "multi" and "media". Multi means "a lot" while the media is the plural form of medium. Now days, the more trend words but sometimes confusing is "new media". The term of computer science which is used in the software interactive application (not linier) and included digital assets such as pictures and sounds are called "hypermedia”. "Hyper" means "above". But what does the meaning of "medium"? According to the dictionary The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000. The word "medium" was defined as follows:

So, medium is the entity which can be passed by something. For example artistic medium (paintings, Sculptures) is a an artist media to express his / her idea. Another example is "mass media", namely communication and information channel. So, multimedia can be defined into two categories, they are multimedia content production and multimedia communication with the definition as follows:
1. Multimedia content production is the different use and the process of some media (text, audio, graphics, animation, video, and interactivity) to convey information or to produce multimedia products (music, video, films, games, entertainments, etc.); or it is the use of some different technology which are possible to combine the media (text, audio, graphics, animation, video, and interactivity) using a new way for the purpose of communication. In this category the media are:
o Text Media
o Audio Media
o Video Media
o Animation Media
o Graph / Image Media
o Interactivity Media
o Special Effects Media
2. Multimedia communication
Multimedia means using media (period), like television, radio, print, and Internet, to publish / broadcast / communicate the material advertising, publicity, entertainment, news, education, etc.. In this category the media (looks at the picture 2.2) are :
• TV
• Radio
• Movies
• Print
• Music
